“Your Wheelchair Can’t Be at My Wedding,” My Sister Said — So I Showed Up With a Gift She’ll Remember Forever…

I’ve been in a wheelchair since I was 17, so I’m used to stares and awkward moments. But nothing hurt more than what my sister said last week before her wedding.

I had been secretly planning to surprise her with an all-expenses-paid honeymoon as my wedding gift.

Then she pulled me aside and said something I’ll never forget.

“Could you maybe not use your wheelchair at the ceremony? It’ll ruin the vintage aesthetic.”

At first, I thought she was joking. But she suggested I rent a “decorative chair” or sit in the back so I wouldn’t “ruin the photos.”

I told her calmly, “Do you think I can just choose to walk for a day?”

She got angry and finally said, “If you won’t compromise, then don’t come at all.”

So I replied, “Then I won’t. And I guess there’s no need for a wedding gift either.”

The next day she called again, suddenly apologetic.

“You can come,” she said quickly. “So… does that mean I still get my gift?”

That’s when I realized something important:

Love without respect isn’t love at all.
