My Sister Borrowed My Car for a Month and Didn’t Refill the Tank Before Returning It – I Ended Up Missing a Job Interview

I’ve always been the sister who says yes. Maybe that’s my flaw.
Three months ago, I had surgery and was ordered to rest. Two days later, my sister Kathy called—her car broke down. She begged to borrow mine, and of course I said yes. For a month she drove it everywhere, even chauffeured me once, and promised she “owed me big time.”
When she finally returned it, I had an important job interview the next morning. I dressed, grabbed my résumé, and rushed to the car—only to find the tank bone dry. By the time I got a ride, I was 30 minutes late. The interview was gone.
Dad was livid when he found out. At dinner, he called Kathy out, made her fill my tank, and repay every dollar. She stormed off, blaming me, but the truth was she showed who she really was.
I used that money to get to another interview. This time, I got the job.
Kathy and I barely speak now. And that’s fine. I’ve learned kindness isn’t weakness—but it does have value. And people who forget that will eventually learn the cost.
