My Best Friend Kicked Me Out Of Her Wedding And Here’s Why

My best friend Greta got engaged last year and asked me to be her maid of honor. I was thrilled. But during bridesmaid dress shopping, she acted strangely—cold, dismissive, like I’d done something wrong. I brushed it off as stress.
On the wedding day, I showed up at the venue only to be stopped by the coordinator: Greta had made it clear I wasn’t allowed in. No explanation. I was escorted out in shock. Days later, I begged her to meet me for coffee.
That’s when she admitted the truth: she kicked me out because of Darren—my ex. Greta had always hated him, and when I dated him, she felt betrayed. She claimed I’d “changed” during that time, stopped being there for her, and our friendship was never the same.
I was devastated. To me, Darren was just part of my past. But to her, he represented a shift she couldn’t forgive. She said she needed peace—and that meant cutting me out, even from her wedding.
It felt like years of friendship had unraveled over something I never knew mattered that much. And yet, as painful as it was, I realized she had chosen herself. Sometimes people grow apart, and no amount of loyalty or history can stop it.
Losing Greta hurt deeply, but it taught me this: friendships, like relationships, can change. And sometimes, the hardest act of love—for them and for yourself—is letting go.
