On Her 7th Birthday, My Daughter Blew Out the Candles on Her Cake and Said, ‘I Wish Dad Never Leaves Me for His New Baby’

My name is Marilyn. My husband, Bruce, and I were excited to throw a fun backyard party for our daughter Joyce’s 7th birthday. I decorated the yard with balloons and got a pink cake with seven candles, but Joyce wasn’t her usual bubbly self.
“Are you okay, sweetheart?” I asked. “Feeling shy?” She only mumbled, “I’m fine.”
As Bruce tried to lift her spirits with a game of tag, and both sets of grandparents kept me busy, I noticed Joyce staying quiet and withdrawn. Hoping to cheer her up, I suggested we open gifts. She unwrapped them all politely but without her usual enthusiasm.
Then came the cake. As everyone sang “Happy Birthday,” Joyce finally smiled—until she made a wish that stunned the whole crowd:
“I wish Dad never leaves me for his new baby.”
Gasps followed. She pulled a small pink pacifier from her pocket and handed it to me. “I found this in Dad’s briefcase,” she said. Attached was a note: “You’ll become a dad soon.”
Bruce’s face turned pale. Later, in our room, he explained: the pacifier had belonged to a pregnant coworker named Claire who had recently passed away. The note was likely meant for her husband. Bruce had packed up her things and, unable to break the man’s heart further, had kept the pacifier, unsure how to handle it.
“I didn’t want you to think anything was going on,” he said. “I was just trying to protect someone.”
Outside, I hugged Joyce tightly. “Daddy’s not leaving us,” I assured her. “He made a mistake, but we’re okay.” Bruce apologized to her and promised to return the pacifier.
Even his father chimed in: “That man deserves to know. It’s not your secret to keep.”
That night, I hugged Bruce and reminded him—sometimes the right thing is the hardest, but it’s never too late to make it right.
