The Letters She Hid for Me

After my mother died, her will left everything to my stepfather. He gave me one week to leave, while his son insisted I had never been family.

Heartbroken, I moved onto a friend’s couch, questioning whether I had ever truly mattered to her.

A week later, my stepfather called, shaken. He had discovered a hidden metal box containing letters addressed to me, personal keepsakes, and cash.

My mother had feared I would be pushed aside. Her letters reminded me how deeply she loved me.

“You are my child,” she wrote. “Always.”

My stepfather apologized, but forgiveness would take time. I left again, carrying something the will hadn’t given me: certainty that I had always been loved.
