For years, my father-in-law disguised cruel remarks about his wife as jokes. Last night, he called her “useless” in front of my children.
Before I could respond, she calmly put down her hand.
“Say that again, and I’ll tell everyone what you tried to cover up in 1998.”
His smile vanished.
“You wouldn’t dare,” he muttered.
“You’ve humiliated me for years,” she replied. “Should we discuss why you missed every family gathering that summer?”
He lowered his eyes and fell silent.
Later, she thanked me for supporting her. “But tonight, I stood up for myself.”
She never revealed the secret, and I didn’t ask. Since then, his remarks have stopped—and my children have seen what it means to set a boundary.
