I Sent My Sick Mother to the Cheapest Nursing Home—After Her Death, Her Plant Broke Me

After my father left me the family home, I asked my 72-year-old mother to move out because my three children needed more space. She didn’t argue or cry. She simply asked to take her favorite plant and be placed in the least expensive nursing home.

I promised myself I would visit, but life kept getting in the way. Forty days later, the nursing home called to say she had died peacefully in her sleep.

She left me the plant and a handwritten note: “Search inside the soil. I’m sorry I couldn’t give you more.”

Buried beneath the roots were three small bags containing gold coins—one for each of my children. She could have used that money to make her final days more comfortable, but she chose to save it for her grandchildren.

Sitting on the kitchen floor with dirt on my hands, I broke down. Even after I chose convenience over compassion, my mother was still thinking about us.

Now I have three bags of coins, one living plant, and a painful lesson learned too late: a mother’s love continues even when her children fail her.
