At 79, My Mom’s Wedding Seemed Perfect Until She Set a Shocking Rule for the Bouquet Catcher — Story of the Day

My mother, at seventy-nine, was planning her wedding, and I couldn’t believe it. She was vibrant, adjusting napkins and worrying over color schemes like it was the most important thing.

“Mom, are you serious?” I asked. “You’re getting married?”

She shrugged, her eyes sparkling, “This isn’t the end, darling. It’s a new beginning!” She had always done what she wanted.

“Why get married now?” I pressed. “You’re perfectly fine on your own!”

“And who says I want to be alone?” she replied. “Harold makes me feel alive again.”

The wedding plans were set: guests invited, dress picked, menu finalized. I sighed, knowing there was no convincing her.

The day of the wedding, I got a flat tire in the middle of nowhere. Thankfully, a man named Nick stopped to help. After a tense exchange with a woman named Julie, I wanted nothing more than to get to the wedding.

At the reception, my mom had a surprise: the bouquet toss winner would go on a date with someone she chose. To my shock, the bouquet landed in my hands. And of course, she chose Nick.

Despite my reluctance, I agreed to a single date to appease my mother. At dinner, I realized Nick was more charming than I’d expected. But when he abruptly left to handle something with Julie, I knew this wouldn’t end well.

The next morning, Nick sent flowers. More followed. Then, my mother invited me to dinner… where Nick and Julie showed up. My mother had orchestrated another “chance” for us.

Nick revealed that Julie was his daughter, not his girlfriend. I was stunned, but after some awkward laughs, I realized that maybe, just maybe, I was ready to give Nick another chance.
