Seismic Swarm Near Indio Puts Southern California on Alert

A series of earthquakes shook Southern California this week, drawing attention across the region. The strongest quake, a 4.9 magnitude, struck near Indio in the Coachella Valley, about 100 miles east of Los Angeles and San Diego. In the hours that followed, more than 150 smaller tremors were recorded, including a 3.8 quake along the San Andreas Fault.
No major damage or injuries were reported, but shaking was felt across a wide area, reminding residents how active the region’s fault lines can be. Scientists say earthquake swarms like this help them study how tectonic pressure shifts underground.
Experts encourage residents to stay prepared by reviewing emergency plans, securing heavy furniture, and keeping emergency kits ready as monitoring continues.
