The Last Slice She Never Expected

I Turned the Tables on My Mother-in-Law
At a party, she pointed at me and said, โIf you put as much effort into being a good wife as you do pretending, maybe my son would eat at home.โ
My husband looked down. The room went silent.
I stayed calm, brought out a cake, and revealed the recipe cardโher handwriting. I reminded everyone she taught me this dessert and that my husband wasnโt avoiding home because of meโhe was busy planning this party for her.
The room stayed quiet. She didnโt touch the cake.
That night, my husband apologized. I realized: respect tastes better than approval.
