The Cupcakes That Taught Us Both A Lesson

I was losing my mind every time I opened the fridge—something I’d been saving was always gone. Leftovers, homemade desserts, even my prepped breakfast. My boyfriend Mason always shrugged it off, blaming his “late-night hunger,” no matter how many times we talked, labeled food, or set boundaries.
So when I baked cupcakes for work, I had a petty idea. I frosted a few with a garlic-mayo mix—harmless, just disgusting—planning to teach Mason a lesson when he inevitably stole one.
The next morning, most of the cupcakes were gone.
I felt victorious… until Mason came home looking grim. He’d taken the cupcakes to his office, thinking they were for work. His coworkers bit into them, chaos followed, and HR got involved. I confessed immediately—it was a prank meant for him, not his coworkers.
To my surprise, Mason laughed, apologized for constantly eating my food, and promised to stop. We replaced the cupcakes, he owned his mistake at work, and somehow the whole mess actually helped his reputation. A month later, he even landed a big project.
Since then, he hasn’t touched my food without asking. We laugh about it now, but the lesson stuck: petty revenge is funny for a moment, but honest communication fixes the real problem—preferably without garlic mayo.
