LOCKED OUT OF MY OWN HOME BY MY EX’S MOTHER

A week after my breakup with Darius, I showed up at our house—my house, too, since my name is on the mortgage—only to find the locks changed. His mother Maureen had done it, handing him the only key and telling me, “For security reasons.” No apology. No explanation. Just like that, I was locked out of my own home.

Then I noticed my mail piling up inside, and later, my card being used at Tesco near his place. When I confronted them, Maureen called me “dramatic” and even told the neighbors not to let me in. That’s when I stopped asking nicely.

With advice from Citizens Advice and a locksmith, I got back inside—only to find my daughter’s high chair gone, photos removed, and my clothes stuffed in trash bags. I took photos and went to court. The judge granted me full access and ruled that if Darius or Maureen set foot inside, it had to be supervised.

Karma didn’t waste time. Darius lost his job, Maureen lost her free ride, and I moved back in with my daughter—new locks, fresh paint, ultrasound photo back on the wall. Now, he sees his child on my terms, in neutral spaces.

What I learned? Don’t wait for permission to reclaim what’s yours. Home, peace, dignity—if it’s yours, take it back.
