Friends For 17 Years

She asked me to watch her daughter while she went on vacation. When her daughter got sick and needed emergency surgery, I stayed by her side, called and texted her mom, but got no response. When she returned, she yelled at me for “overstepping,” saying I made her look bad.

No thanks. No apology. Just blame.

Later, her daughter, Mia, told me her mom had ignored the calls on purpose—she didn’t want to ruin her trip. After that, the friendship faded.

Years passed. Then I got a letter.

“You were my safe person. I’m in nursing school now because of you. Thank you for seeing me.”

It was signed Mia.

In the end, I didn’t lose a friend. I gained something more meaningful—a lasting bond with someone I helped when it mattered most.
