My would-be mother-in-law forced me to wash in an outdoor basin as a “test”—but in the end, karma caught up with her

“Weekend at the Lake House? More Like a Trap.”
Josh’s mom invited me to their lake house for a “quiet weekend.” Three months into our engagement, I thought it’d be a chance to bond. Instead, I ended up scrubbing toilets, cooking meals, and bathing outside — literally in a metal basin behind the house.
She called it a “test,” but it felt like hazing. I stayed quiet until the next morning, when I overheard her bragging on the phone:
“She thinks the shower’s broken. It works fine. Just wanted to see what kind of girl she is.”
But karma has perfect timing.
That afternoon, a plumber arrived early — just as she stepped out of that “broken” shower. Her scream echoed through the house.
Josh finally saw the truth.
We packed up and left. No words from her. She didn’t need to say anything.
On the drive home, Josh said, “I’m sorry for not standing up for you.”
I looked at him and replied,
“She wasn’t just testing me. She was testing you too.”
That weekend didn’t break us — it revealed us. And karma? She doesn’t knock. She lets herself in.
