I Spent Five Years Caring for My Father—His Will Left Me With Only a Broken Watch

After five years as my father’s full-time caregiver, I inherited only a broken silver watch. My sister, Vanessa, received the house, savings, and our mother’s jewelry.

As she hugged me after the will reading, she whispered, “He always loved me more.”

Three weeks later, Dad’s attorney arrived with a second will—and a truth Vanessa had hoped would stay hidden.

She had convinced Dad that I cared for him only for his money. Before he died, he discovered the truth and changed his wishes. Vanessa would keep the house, but his savings, land, and investments belonged to me.

Then the attorney handed me Dad’s final note. The watch had stopped when Mom died.

“Time may stop, but love never does.”

Vanessa threatened to challenge the inheritance, but the final will stood. I bought a modest home, returned to work, and began rebuilding my life.

I also repaired Dad’s watch—but kept its cracked face. Every day, it reminds me that love never loses its value.
