Girl in Pumpkin Costume Found Crying on Porch; Police Inspect Costume Later
I found a five-year-old girl alone on my porch on Halloween. She said someone told her to wait, but wouldn’t say who. An hour later, police arrived and noticed something strange about her costume.
I’m Margaret, 54, and my husband was away. Around 8 p.m., I heard crying outside. I opened the door to find a little girl in an orange pumpkin costume, clearly upset and without a candy bucket. I brought her inside, gave her water, and called the police.
When the officers arrived, the girl hid behind my chair. Officer Miller asked her name, but she stayed silent. His partner, Officer Davis, noticed her costume and asked me to check it for something sewn inside. When I tried to cut it open, the girl panicked, saying someone said not to.
After we removed the costume, a photograph slipped out showing a toddler named Olivia, missing since 2022. The little girl beside me said her name was Emma and recognized the people in the photo as those her father said used to live with them.
As the officers investigated, Emma revealed her father, Thomas, told her there was a surprise in the costume and not to let anyone open it. I learned that she was likely the missing Olivia, taken by her father during a custody visit three years ago.
Days later, Detective Hayes confirmed Olivia's identity and that Thomas had been found. He had taken her illegally and was now in custody. Olivia's mother, Sarah, reached out to thank me for caring for her daughter.
When Sarah visited, she shared how Olivia didn’t recognize her and had believed her name was Emma. With time and support, they are helping Olivia adjust to her new life.
Four months later, Olivia is in counseling and has people ensuring her safety. Sarah sent me a message saying Olivia remembered my house and asked about her pumpkin costume. I felt emotional knowing that Olivia is learning the truth about her identity and that she’s no longer alone.
If you were in my place, would you have brought the girl inside or kept her outside?
