The Baby He Never Told Me About

At my husband’s funeral, an elderly woman stood near his grave holding a baby in a blue blanket.
“He’s your husband’s son,” she quietly told me.
I accused her of lying. But she explained that the baby’s mother had died during childbirth, leaving no one to care for him.
Minutes later, I heard crying. She had left the baby in a basket beside the cemetery path—and handed me an envelope before disappearing.
Inside was a letter in my husband’s handwriting. He confessed to an affair and pleaded that his son never grow up feeling unwanted.
I sat beside the basket, devastated by the betrayal. Then the baby wrapped his tiny fingers around mine.
I couldn’t forgive my husband that day. But I picked up his son and carried him home.
