I Thought I Was Reuniting with My First Love – Then I Realized the Man in Front of Me Wasn’t Him

Thirty-one years after my first love, Callum, vanished without a goodbye, I spotted him in a fundraiser photo. His parents had told me he’d taken a job overseas and wanted no contact. Now, after losing my husband, I finally had the chance to ask him why.

The man who met me at a café looked and sounded exactly like Callum. He even remembered our college days. But when he insisted his name was Lui, I noticed his ring finger was straight. Callum’s had healed crooked after a baseball injury. Then I saw the watch on his wrist—the one I had given Callum.

Lui admitted he was Callum’s identical twin, separated from him at birth. He told me Callum had disappeared after witnessing a serious crime and entering protective custody. Callum was still alive, but someone had recently accessed records tied to the case. Afraid my message might be a trap, he had sent Lui to meet me.

Before I could ask where Callum was, Lui’s phone rang. His face went pale as he looked toward the café windows.

“They know you found me,” he whispered. “We have to leave. Right now.”
