What we know about gunfire at White House correspondents’ dinner

US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were evacuated from the White House Correspondents’ Dinner after gunshots were reported at the venue.

The United States Secret Service confirmed no injuries and said the suspect, identified as Cole Tomas Allen, is in custody.

Chaos broke out when a man rushed security at the Washington Hilton, where the event was held. Reports say multiple shots were fired before security subdued the suspect.

Trump later said the situation was “shocking” but under control, praising law enforcement and confirming a Secret Service agent survived thanks to a bulletproof vest.

The historic White House Correspondents’ Dinner, a tradition since 1921, was briefly locked down and later postponed as authorities secured the scene.
