My name is Derek, and I had parked in the same spot outside my apartment building for three years without a problem. Then one Friday night, a loud crash sent me running to the window.

A wooden dining chair had fallen from the fourth floor, crushing my hood and cracking my windshield. My upstairs neighbor, Trevor, leaned over his balcony and casually claimed it had “slipped.” When I asked him to pay for the repairs, he said he would think about it.
