THE SECRET MY MOTHER TOOK TO HER GRAVE

My mother worked as a nurse for over thirty years, caring for strangers without asking for recognition. When she died of cancer at fifty-five, her funeral was filled with people whose lives she had touched.

Near the end of the service, a woman approached me in tears, holding a photo of a premature baby. On the back, my mother had written: “She’s safe. Stay strong.”

The woman explained that she had been fifteen and terrified when she gave birth. Her family wanted to force an adoption, so my mother told them the baby had died while she helped the teenager find support and make her own decision.

The young mother kept her daughter, who had grown up and started a family of her own. My mother had never mentioned any of it.

As I listened, my grief mixed with pride. I knew she had been a kind nurse, but I was still discovering how deeply she had changed people’s lives.
