Study Examines Whether a Popular Drug May Be Connected to Dementia

New studies suggest some commonly used medications—especially anticholinergic drugs for allergies, depression, and sleep issues—may be linked to a higher risk of dementia, particularly with long-term or high-dose use. Other drugs like gabapentin, benzodiazepines, and antipsychotics are also under review for possible cognitive effects. While no direct cause is confirmed, experts urge patients to speak with doctors before making changes and to carefully weigh benefits against potential long-term brain health risks.
