Scientists may have uncovered why rare myocarditis cases can happen after mRNA COVID-19 vaccines. A new Stanford Medicine study points to two immune proteins, CXCL10 and IFN-gamma, that may trigger heart inflammation in uncommon cases, especially in younger males. Researchers say the overall risk remains very low, and COVID-19 infection itself carries a higher risk of myocarditis and serious complications. The findings could help make future mRNA vaccines even safer and lead to new prevention strategies.
