An emergency room doctor has issued a serious alert about avocados, noting that thousands of people are ending up in the hospital with the same type of injury.

“Avocado Hand” Is Sending Thousands to the ER Every Year — Here’s How to Avoid It

A simple kitchen mistake called “avocado hand” is causing thousands of injuries each year. Doctors say around 9,000 people annually need medical care after cutting their hands while removing an avocado pit.

Emergency physician Dr. Joe Whittington explains that most injuries happen when people hold the avocado in one hand and strike the pit with a knife. Because the fruit is slippery, the knife can easily slip and cause deep cuts — sometimes damaging nerves or tendons.

Safer method:
Place the avocado on a cutting board, slice it lengthwise, twist the halves apart, and carefully remove the pit with controlled pressure instead of force.

He also notes that slightly brown avocados are usually still safe to eat — the color change is just oxidation.

A small change in technique can prevent serious injuries and keep your kitchen safe while you enjoy healthy meals like toast, salads, and guacamole.
