Plantar warts on the feet: what they are and why they shouldn’t be mistaken for a regular callus

🦶 Hard Spot on Your Foot? It Might Not Be a Callus!

Many people assume a hard patch is just a callus, but it could be a plantar wart, a viral infection caused by HPV. Unlike calluses, warts can spread and become painful, so knowing the difference matters.

How to Tell:

  • Plantar warts: rough surface, tiny black dots, hurt when pinched from the sides.

  • Calluses: smooth, thick skin, hurt only when pressed directly.

Causes:

  • Calluses: friction or pressure.

  • Plantar warts: HPV from public showers, pools, or locker rooms.

Treatment & Prevention:

  • Salicylic acid, cryotherapy, or medical care.

  • Keep feet clean, dry, avoid sharing towels or shoes, wear flip-flops in public areas.

💡 Tip: If it has black dots, spreads, or hurts differently than a callus, see a doctor. Early care prevents bigger problems!
