Just Because You Can, Doesn’t Mean You Should

As a kid, I once learned that being clever is good, but being kind is better. Years later, running my own tech repair shop, I forgot that lesson. I used confusing prices and technical language to earn more, knowing most customers wouldn’t question it. I never lied — I just made things sound harder than they were.
One day, a tired mom named Marla paid full price when I knew I could’ve charged less. Later, she recommended me for a $25,000 business grant because she trusted me. Not long after, my employee quit and built an app to show people fair repair prices. Instead of getting angry, I felt ashamed.
That’s when I changed. I made my pricing honest, offered free advice, and stopped using shortcuts. I earned less per job, but more people came. Soon, customers called me “the guy who tells the truth.”
Cleverness can bring success, but character builds respect. In business and in life, honesty always pays in the end.
