When Dad Calls Home

“Hello?”

“Hi sweetheart, it’s Daddy. Is Mommy nearby?”

“No, Daddy. She’s upstairs with Uncle Paul.”

A pause.
“But honey, you don’t have an Uncle Paul.”

“Yes I do. He’s upstairs with Mommy right now.”

Another pause.

“Okay,” Daddy says. “Put the phone down, run upstairs, knock on the bedroom door, and tell Mommy Daddy’s car just pulled into the driveway.”

A few minutes later, the girl returns.
“I did it.”

“What happened?”

“Mommy got scared, jumped out of bed naked, started screaming, tripped, hit her head—and now she’s not moving.”

“Oh my God. And Uncle Paul?”

“He jumped out the window naked and landed in the swimming pool. But you drained it last week. I think he’s dead.”

Long silence.

“Swimming pool? … Is this 486-5731?”
