Doctors warn against high-dose vitamin C supplements

Vitamin C is widely used to boost immunity during winter, but doctors warn that taking too much vitamin C may cause health problems. While it supports immune function, iron absorption, and healthy skin and bones, most people get enough from fruits and vegetables like oranges, berries, peppers, and broccoli.

Experts recommend 75 mg daily for women and 90 mg for men. Doses over 1,000 mg per day can lead to diarrhoea, nausea, bloating, and stomach cramps, according to the NHS. High intake may also increase the risk of kidney stones, which can cause severe pain, fever, nausea, and blood in urine.

Health professionals advise reducing or stopping supplements if symptoms appear and relying on a balanced diet whenever possible.
