Offshore Oregon Earthquake Sparks Brief Concern, Offers Reminder on Preparedness

A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck the Pacific Ocean off the Oregon coast late Thursday night, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The quake hit about 180 miles offshore, limiting onshore impact, though a 3.1 aftershock followed early Friday. Light shaking was reported in parts of Portland, Eugene, Salem, and Coos Bay, sparking concern across the Pacific Northwest.

Officials briefly activated tsunami monitoring, but quickly confirmed no tsunami threat and no need for evacuations. Seismologists say the quake occurred near the Juan de Fuca Plate along the Cascadia Subduction Zone, a known seismic hotspot. While aftershocks are possible, experts say the risk of a larger earthquake remains low. Emergency officials continue to urge earthquake preparedness and staying informed.
