The Family You Don’t Choose, But Grow To Love

When my sister asked me to watch her kids, I wanted to get paid. She laughed and dropped them off anyway. Not a “kid person,” I left them at my friend Marla’s daycare. But after forgetting Lily’s stuffed bunny, I realized they needed me more than I thought.

By week’s end, we were spending days together—zoo trips, messy pancakes, and laughter. Then Sophie showed up at the park, claiming to be my dad’s daughter from before he met my mom.

We connected, and I invited her into my life. My sister returned surprised to find me caring for her kids like family.

Months later, I started working with kids full-time, thanks to Marla’s encouragement.

I asked for money but found something better: family, purpose, and unexpected love.
