My Son Left College For Love In An Online Game — Then Life Taught Us All A Lesson

My son dropped out of college and moved across the country to marry a girl he met in an online game. I was shocked — he’d left everything behind for someone he barely knew. Then he called, asking me to visit and bring his childhood photo albums.
When I arrived in rural Nebraska, I met Tessa — sweet, nervous, and holding a handmade “Welcome, Mom” sign. Her family lived simply on a small farm, and as we shared dinner, I saw my son laugh, work, and talk about things that mattered. It was like meeting a new version of him.
Later, he confessed the truth: he hadn’t left college for love — he’d been failing, burned out, and lost. “Tessa just gave me somewhere to land,” he said. Now, he was studying again, rebuilding his life.
Before I left, her mother told me, “You raised him right. He just needed to find his way.”
Weeks later, a scrapbook arrived in the mail. On the first page was a photo of us laughing, with a note from Tessa:
“Thanks for building a boy who knows how to rebuild himself. Now you’re stuck with us too.”
That’s when I realized — sometimes what looks like a mistake is really a detour toward the life you’re meant to live.
