After His Mother Died, My Son Couldn’t Sleep at Night—Until One Evening, I Overheard What My Wife Whispered to Him.

After my ex-wife died in a car accident, our fourteen-year-old son, Jake, began waking up screaming from nightmares. I slept on his bedroom floor so he’d know I was there.
My wife, Sarah, called it ridiculous. Then one night, I overheard her telling him, “Your mom wasn’t even around that much. Now you’re forcing your dad to choose between us.”
I stepped inside. “My son lost his mother. Grief doesn’t have an age limit.”
Sarah accused him of seeking attention and demanded I choose between him and our marriage.
I didn’t hesitate.
She packed a bag and left. I returned to Jake, who leaned into my arms.
I don’t know whether my marriage will survive. But my son will never have to face his grief alone.
