A Woman’s MIL Picked Out Lingerie for Her at the Store, Saying She Should ‘Spoil Her Son More Often’ – So the Woman Asked the Saleswoman for a Favor, and Her MIL Screamed, ‘How Dare You?!’

Three months after I gave birth, my mother-in-law became obsessed with my appearance. A lingerie shopping trip finally pushed me to set boundaries.
Diane criticized my meals, inspected my nursing bras, and even measured my waist.
“My son deserves a pretty wife,” she insisted.
I needed sleep and help with our newborn—not insults.
Then she dragged me into a lingerie store, choosing tiny lace sets so I could “please her son more often.”
I quietly asked the saleswoman to wrap Diane a gift: a pink gag.
“Are you telling me to shut up?” she shouted.
“You’re catching on.”
At lunch, she demanded my husband, Ryan, take her side. Instead, he asked for our house key back.
Then his grandmother, Margaret, arrived and immediately criticized Diane’s weight, clothes, and hair.
Watching Diane shrink in her chair, I recognized how she had made me feel. When Margaret questioned her lunch order, I intervened.
“Diane can order whatever she wants.”
Later, Diane admitted Margaret had treated her that way for decades—even measuring her waist after childbirth.
“You hated it,” I said. “Why do it to me?”
“I thought that’s what mothers-in-law did.”
“Maybe it’s time we stopped.”
Diane apologized. When Margaret made another remark, she finally answered:
“I’m sixty-two. I’m allowed to look sixty-two.”
For once, we agreed: the criticism needed to end.
