I Grabbed a Wrench to Teach My Neighbor a Lesson — Then I Discovered Why He Kept Blocking My Driveway

After twelve-hour hospital shifts, I kept finding a black SUV blocking my private driveway. My neighbor, Derek, ignored my notes and messages until, furious, I grabbed a wrench.

Before I touched it, his teenage son, Lucas, stopped me. Derek then explained that the SUV belonged to his wife Sarah’s home-care service. She had ALS, and my flat driveway safely accommodated her wheelchair lift. Overwhelmed and embarrassed, he had put off asking permission.

Sarah apologized from the porch. She was moving to hospice the next morning. I put the wrench away, and we finally talked.

After Sarah died weeks later, Derek gave me my first parking note. She had saved it because their argument briefly felt ordinary—a driveway dispute instead of another conversation about dying.

Derek and I became friends. A year later, he gave me a framed wrench labeled “Advanced Diplomacy,” reminding me of Sarah’s advice: “Get curious before you get destructive.”
