The Thanksgiving Secret Hidden in Grace’s Hair
At Thanksgiving dinner, my preschooler Grace kept squirming in her chair. When I lifted her hair, I found a tangled wad of gum hidden underneath. My mother-in-law, who had insisted on doing Grace’s hair that day, went pale.
As I gently worked the gum out, Grace whispered, “Grandma told me not to tell you.” Later, my mother-in-law admitted she had tried to style Grace’s hair despite knowing I’d asked her not to. When gum got stuck, she panicked, brushed it into a worse tangle, and hid it because she was afraid I’d be angry.
I told her the accident was something we could handle together. Asking Grace to keep it secret was what upset me. She apologized and promised to tell me right away if anything happened again. By bedtime, Grace was laughing with her grandmother—and her hair was finally free of gum.
