After his mother passed away, my son couldn’t sleep at night—until one evening I overheard what my wife quietly whispered to him.

Three weeks after my ex-wife died in a car accident, our fourteen-year-old son, Jake, began having nightmares. He told everyone he was fine, but each night I heard him scream my name. I started sleeping on the floor beside his bed so that when he woke up frightened, he could see I was there.

My wife, Sarah, called it “sick” and said Jake was too old to need me. I told her he had just lost his mother, but she wouldn’t listen. Later that night, I heard her in Jake’s room telling him he was making me choose between him and our marriage. She even dismissed his grief and told him to grow up.

I stopped her. Sarah insisted Jake was seeking attention, then said I was choosing my son over her. I told her I would be there for Jake every time. She packed a bag and left for her sister’s house that night.

After she was gone, Jake leaned against me without a word. I held him and realized I wasn’t sure I wanted Sarah back. I couldn’t trust someone who treated my grieving son’s need for his father as a threat.
