The Popcorn Warning That Saved Me

Our first date at the movie theater felt effortless. He greeted me with a smile, offered to buy popcorn, and made me laugh while we waited for the film. But when I ordered candy at the concession stand, the girl behind the counter handed me popcorn instead. She leaned closer and whispered, “Careful.”
I tried to put the warning out of my mind. Then, halfway through the movie, I reached into the popcorn and found a folded envelope. The note inside read: “If you’re here with him, please find me after the movie. You deserve to know the truth.”
As soon as the film ended, I went back to the concession stand. The girl told me she’d seen him bring different women to the theater, winning them over with the same charm before disappearing weeks later. One woman had even left in tears. Suddenly, the sweet things he’d said to me sounded rehearsed.
He was waiting outside with that same easy smile. I told him I’d find my own way home and walked away. Later, I thanked the girl for speaking up. Her reply stayed with me: “You deserve better.”
