I Came Home on Christmas Eve and Found My Daughter Freezing Outside—Then I Learned What Her Husband’s Family Had Done

I came home to Boise on Christmas Eve to surprise my daughter, Emily. Instead, I found her shivering on the porch in a thin blouse while her husband Ryan’s family celebrated inside by the fireplace.
Through the door, I heard them mocking Emily’s four miscarriages and dismissing her depression. I wrapped her in my jacket and carried her inside. When Ryan told me to leave her out in the cold, I knew I couldn’t leave her there another night.
Emily moved in with me and sought a divorce, but the court rejected her abuse claims and awarded Ryan most of their shared property. She was devastated. In the weeks that followed, support from our community and visits from Jake, a family friend, helped her begin to feel less alone.
By spring, I saw Emily smile again. The Christmas Eve I’d imagined never happened, but my daughter was finally somewhere she could begin to heal.
