Two years after my wife Claire disappeared in a boating accident, my seven-year-old son spotted her bracelet inside a stranger’s pool locker. The locker also contained her wallet, photo, and a final note written for our son.

The man, Marcus, revealed that he had survived the accident because Claire saved him and another coworker before being swept away. Overcome with guilt, he had kept her belongings for two years, afraid to face us.
