On Our 21st Birthday, We Received a Box – We Gasped When We Saw What Was Inside

Gia, Leila, and Nora were once inseparable triplets. But when Nora died at 11, grief pushed the surviving sisters apart.
On their 21st birthday, their mother placed a wooden box on the breakfast table. Nora had prepared it before her death with instructions to open it that day.
Inside were childhood photographs, bracelets, personal letters, and one final message for both sisters:
“Don’t let me become the space between you. You are not just the two who stayed—you are my sisters. Save me a slice of cake and tell each other one good thing that happened each year. I want to know you lived.”
Beneath a paper crown, they found a cassette containing Nora’s voice. She reminded them that neither should feel guilty for surviving and ended with: “I loved you first. I loved you last. And I’m still your sister.”
Gia and Leila finally embraced, admitting they had missed each other too. That morning, they cut three slices of cake—and for the first time, Nora’s empty chair felt like a place reserved for love, not loss.
