A Week After We Moved in Together, He Handed Me a ‘House Uniform’—He Wasn’t Ready for What Came Next

A week after marriage, my husband gave me a frilly “house uniform” and called it tradition, expecting me to become a full-time homemaker. Instead of arguing, I played along and exaggerated the role to show how controlling his expectations were—especially when it embarrassed him in front of his coworkers.

The act forced a wake-up call. He admitted he’d idealized his mother’s lifestyle and unfairly projected it onto me. I made it clear I wouldn’t live as a servant.

In the end, we reset our marriage expectations, I put the uniform away, and I returned to my own career plans—learning that marriage should be partnership, not performance.
