Senate to Hold Floor Vote on Popular House-Passed Voter ID Bill

Senate Majority Leader John Thune says the Senate will soon vote on the SAVE Act, a Republican-backed bill requiring proof of U.S. citizenship to register for federal elections.

The House-passed legislation would require documents like passports or birth certificates and direct states to verify voter rolls using federal databases. Supporters argue it strengthens election security, while critics warn it could block eligible voters from registering.

The bill faces a difficult path in the Senate, where it would need 60 votes to advance amid strong Democratic opposition.
