I am 87 years old: if you cannot live alone, before going to a care home, consider these alternatives.

At 87, I was close to losing my independence—not because I couldn’t live my life, but because I was being told I couldn’t.

It felt like I only had two choices: struggle alone or move into a care home.

But I discovered a third option.

Instead of giving up my home, I asked for small, specific help—groceries, rides, simple check-ins. When I did, people showed up.

Neighbors stepped in. Support grew naturally around me. I didn’t disappear from my life—I stayed in it, with help.

Aging isn’t always about surrender. Sometimes it’s about asking differently and letting community in.
