While sorting through his belongings, we found a heavy, dust-covered object we couldn’t immediately identify. It felt old but intentional—clearly something once used with purpose.
After some research, we discovered it was a “fid”—a traditional maritime tool sailors used to untangle, separate, and splice rope at sea.
What looked like a random item turned out to be a piece of seafaring history. It could be imagined in the hands of sailors working on rough waters, where even simple tools were essential for survival.
It was a reminder that without context, meaning is easily lost—and everyday objects can carry forgotten stories from the past.
