New Covid variant “Cicada” prompts vaccine concerns and symptom warnings

New COVID Variant “Cicada” (BA.3.2): What Experts Want You to Know
A new COVID variant known as Cicada (BA.3.2) was first identified in South Africa in late 2024 and has since been detected in countries including the US, UK, Japan, and Kenya. Scientists say it shows significant genetic changes compared to earlier strains, meaning it may spread before being easily noticed.
So far, doctors report no evidence that it is more deadly than previous variants.
Common symptoms include:
✔ Cough
✔ Fever and fatigue
✔ Sore throat and congestion
✔ Shortness of breath
✔ Loss of taste or smell
Home tests still detect infections, and vaccines continue to strongly reduce severe illness and hospitalization, even if they don’t prevent every case.
Health experts advise staying informed, practicing good hygiene, resting when sick, and keeping vaccinations up to date.
The virus keeps evolving — but prevention and awareness still work.
