Simon Cowell has revealed that Britain’s Got Talent almost had a very different judging panel.

The ITV talent show, hosted by Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly, first launched in 2007 and returns this week for its 18th series. Cowell currently judges alongside Amanda Holden, Alesha Dixon, and YouTuber KSI.

However, Holden—now a fan favorite—was nearly not cast at all. Cowell revealed that the role was originally offered to Cheryl Cole, who pulled out just a week before filming.

“We suddenly had only two judges and very little time,” Cowell said. “I knew Amanda was perfect for the show.”

Nearly two decades later, Holden remains a central figure on Britain’s Got Talent. Cowell called her the show’s “queen,” adding that she is now one of his closest friends.
