Two men were going to go on a journey by rail

This tale takes place in the early 20th century, when steam trains were still a common mode of travel. Two men, both inexperienced with train journeys, were feeling a bit anxious. To distract themselves, they decided to bring some oranges along.
They purchased the cheapest tickets for the third-class carriage, which featured simple wooden benches and no lighting. Despite the spartan conditions, the men began to enjoy the ride.
After about half an hour, they each decided to eat an orange. Just as the first man took a bite, the train entered a tunnel.
“Have you started yours yet?” he asked the second man.
“No,” came the reply.
“Don’t touch it!” warned the first man. “I took one bite and now I can’t see a thing!”
