A man had been driving for hours through empty countryside when, as he passed a farmhouse, a cat suddenly darted in front of his car — and he ran it over.
Wanting to do the right thing, he turned around, pulled into the driveway, and knocked on the door. When the farmer’s wife answered, he said:
“Ma’am, I’m so sorry. I just hit a cat out front, and I thought it might be yours. I didn’t want to just drive away without telling you.”
She frowned and asked, “But how do you know it was our cat? Can you describe him? What does he look like?”
The man immediately dropped to the ground and sprawled out, doing his best impression of a flattened cat.
Horrified, she exclaimed, “No, no! I meant, what did he look like before you hit him?”
