I Won Tickets for a Romantic Getaway, and upon Arriving at the Hotel, I Realized That a Terrible Mistake Had Occurred

My name is Megan, and I’m 43. For over ten years, I’ve started every day making breakfast and packing lunch for my husband, Neil. I kept the house running while he worked, often coming home tired or drunk after stops with friends.

One morning, excitedly, I told Neil I’d won plane tickets for a romantic weekend getaway. But he was irritated and said he couldn’t go because of plans with his friends. I was crushed but tried to hide my disappointment and decided to go alone.

At the hotel, a mistake gave me the same room as another guest, Thomas. After a scary moment when I thought he was an intruder, we laughed it off and ended up spending the night sharing the room. The next day, we connected over breakfast and spent the day exploring together, sharing stories, and enjoying each other’s company.

Returning home, Neil was drunk and furious I’d left without telling him. His anger pushed me to finally end our marriage. I packed my things, left, and called Thomas, asking to spend another day with him. I booked a one-way ticket, ready to leave behind the life that had trapped me and start anew.
