My Kid Broke My SIL’s TV Screen, and I Was Ready to Pay for It — but Then She Demanded an Upgraded Version

Have you ever had someone exploit your kindness? I was ready to pay my sister-in-law for a TV my son accidentally broke—but she took it too far, demanding a brand-new, upgraded model instead. When I refused, she threatened to sue. But karma had her own plans.

It started when I babysat her son Liam and mine, Jake. While I was in the kitchen, Jake accidentally threw a toy grenade that smashed her expensive TV.

I immediately offered to replace the TV with the same model—worth about $1,100. Dora seemed fine at first, but days later, she emailed demanding $2,500, saying she was “upgrading” and I should cover the full cost.

When I pushed back, she got furious and insulted my son, who was already feeling guilty.

It was clear she was trying to squeeze me for more than was fair. Sometimes owning up and trying to do right doesn’t stop people from taking advantage.
